Exiles will honour the memory of Wales' only individual World Champion with an individual meeting.
Newport Exiles today announced plans to host two individual meetings this season to compliment the Exiles race programme, including an event to honour Freddie Williams, the Port Talbot born twice World Speedway Champion. The winner of the 1950 and 1953 World title is the only Welshman to ever win the Championship and died in 2013 aged 86.
Despite being a proud Welshman, he unfortunately had to ride for England in Test Matches, something which, over time, we hope to correct for future generations of Welsh riders coming through. We are very proud to honour his memory with a meeting in his memory and with a prize pot of £8,000 and an entry fee for riders of just £350, we hope to get an exciting line-up for the inaugural running.
Also announced was that the Exiles would be hosting a round of the Champion Apprentice competition. The Champion Apprentice is a GP style competition for all the 15-year old apprentices across the Sovereign League and the Exiles are delighted to be hosting some of the best teenage riders in the country.
